25mm is the standard size that fits most heat management devices and bowl sizes. Coconut charcoal is the preferred choice for hookah sessions because it burns clean — no chemical accelerants, minimal ash, and no off-flavors that could affect your tobacco taste. The 25mm size offers a good balance of burn time (typically 60-90 minutes per piece) and heat output.
Coconut charcoal requires proper lighting — typically 8-10 minutes on an electric heater or 2-3 minutes with a powerful gas burner until the coal is fully glowing red across all sides. A charcoal holder (or coal carrier) is a metal container with a handle, designed to move lit coals safely from the burner to the bowl. It stops the routine accidents: dropped coals on the rug, burns from tongs that slip, scorch marks on the table where you set down a hot coal for a moment. Most models are stainless steel with a removable insert that you can shake the ash out of when you're done. Small piece of kit, big quality-of-life upgrade once you have one.
Carrying hot coals with bare tongs over a rug or near kids is unnecessary risk. A holder solves the problem cleanly. The coals have a designated spot, the tongs aren't suspended in midair, and the hot underside doesn't burn the tabletop you set them down on.
