Upgrade Form UPG bowls are made from a faience-majolica ceramic mix, a material that no other bowl maker in this segment uses. Faience is high-fired ceramic that sits close to porcelain in density. Heat distribution is more uniform than ordinary clay, and absorption is significantly lower. The thick walls of the UPG slow the heat ramp slightly, but the trade-off is consistent temperature with very little session-by-session correction needed. The Classic has 7 holes in the base (7 mm each), 82 mm outer diameter, and a 17 mm bowl depth. Phunnel models are available glazed: Iron Glaze (metal-look finish), Terra Glaze (terracotta tones), and Turtle Glaze.

The UPG handles a wide range of tobaccos, but the thick faience-majolica walls are particularly appreciated by dark leaf smokers. Stable, slow heat means consistent temperature across the session without spikes. On dense, wet Burley-based blends, that's what prevents scorching. The phunnel models (Iron Glaze, Terra Glaze) hold molasses inside the bowl, extending sessions to 60 to 90 minutes. The classic 7-hole model works equally well with lighter Virginia blends and the traditional foil-pack approach. UPG bowls are considered among the most engineering-driven products on the market, one of the few brands that consistently publishes precise dimensions (height, outer and inner diameter, depth). Rule of thumb: phunnel for wet dark leaf, Classic for everything else.

UPG's faience-majolica ceramic is smooth and low-porosity, which makes maintenance simple. Once the bowl is cool, warm water lifts the molasses residue without effort. A soft brush handles the interior and the hole pattern. Don't use detergents or soap. Even on faience, the long-term risk of chemical residue working into the ceramic is real, and not worth the convenience.
