Frequently asked questions

What's a hookah windcover and what does it actually do?

A windcover is a metal shield that sits around the bowl with the coals on top, blocking direct airflow over them. Without one, a gust of wind can either oxidize the coals into a quick burn or smother them, both of which give uneven heat to the tobacco. Indoors a windcover isn't essential. On a balcony, in a garden, or anywhere with a breeze, it makes the difference between a stable session and one where you're constantly adjusting heat.

How do I pick a windcover?

The cover needs to be taller than the coals and the bowl with foil or HMD combined. Check the base diameter so it sits stable around the bowl without sliding. Stainless steel is the most durable build. Telescoping models are more convenient since they adjust to different bowl heights without you having to keep multiple covers around for different setups. Skip anything thin enough to dent in transport, since dents kill the seal.

Does a windcover change flavor or smoke temperature?

It stabilizes the coal temperature, which translates into a more consistent flavor across the whole session. Indoors, it can slightly raise smoke temperature by limiting heat dissipation from the coals. If the smoke starts feeling harsh, lift the cover for a minute or swap one coal out for a lighter one. The cover doesn't add heat by itself, it just stops cold air from stealing it, so the fix is usually one coal too many, not the cover.
