They're silicone or rubber rings that sit between the neck of the glass base and the metal foot of the stem. The whole job is to make that junction airtight so the hookah doesn't pull outside air when you draw. Worn or cracked gaskets are one of the most common reasons a session feels weak even when everything else looks fine. Air leaking in at the base dilutes smoke before it ever reaches the hose.
Measure the inner diameter of the base neck, or check the spec sheet that came with the hookah. Gaskets are sold in S, M and L sizes that map to the common joint diameters of 14, 18, and 22 mm. If you own a brand-name hookah, look for gaskets made specifically for that manufacturer's stems. They fit on the first try without any adjusting. Universal gaskets are fine as a fallback, but a brand-matched part is one less thing to second-guess.
Pull the old gasket off and wipe both mating surfaces dry. Slide the new silicone gasket onto the base neck. It should go on without force but still hold its position. Drop the base into the stem and test the seal: cover the hose port and draw. The resistance should feel even, with no air whistling in. If the gasket sits too loose, skip the teflon-tape workaround. That's a temporary patch at best. Order a gasket one size thicker instead and you're done.
