Minimum length is 18 cm. Anything shorter puts your knuckles too close to a glowing coal and you'll feel it. The tips need to grip a cube cleanly, no sliding when you lift. Stainless steel lasts longer than plain steel, which rusts on contact with moisture and can transfer that color onto fresh coals. A silicone-wrapped handle is more comfortable in the hand, but check the rating, because the cheap ones soften after long contact with heat and lose their grip. Cheap stamped tongs heat up fast and slip, that's not real saving.
For 15 to 30 PLN you get a functional stainless steel pair that will outlive the bowl in your other hand. Premium models with ergonomic handles run 50 to 80 PLN. Anything under 10 PLN tends to be thin pressed metal that heats up through to the handle and slips when you grip a coal. Branded options from Alpha, Hoob and similar makers come with logos and color choices, which is purely aesthetic. The hinge quality and tip shape are what matter, not the badge.
After each session, wipe the hinge dry. Ash and molasses build up exactly where the joint pivots and that's what eventually makes tongs sticky or stiff. Once a month, drop a tiny amount of food-grade oil (coconut oil works) into the hinge. Avoid machine or technical oils, since they're not meant for tools that handle anything you put near food or drinks. If the tongs are plain steel, keep them away from damp. Rust transfers onto coals and that gets into the smoke.
