The flask (or base) is one of the most important hookah components. It holds the water that filters and cools the smoke before it reaches the smoker. The flask carries the whole rig and cools the smoke, so the base matters more than people think. Wide-bottom models are stable and resist tipping over from a stray hand or cable. Clear glass lets you see the water level and how clean the inside is, which makes a real difference if you smoke regularly. Craft flasks like the Pyramid line also work as a centerpiece on the table. Before buying, check the connector compatibility with your stem. Flasks come with either threaded or gasket fittings, and gasket types have the widest range of available replacements.
The right amount of water submerges the stem 2 to 3 cm below the surface. Too little water gives you a hot dry hit. Too much risks water reaching the hose. Ice works well, especially in summer, and noticeably cools the smoke. Some smokers add citrus slices or mint for aroma, but realistically that doesn't change the flavor much. The water level matters far more than what you put in it. Get the depth right and the smoke does the rest.
After each session, rinse with warm water and shake it out hard a few times. Every few sessions, use a flask brush with a couple of drops of hookah cleaner. Skip hard wire brushes, they leave permanent scratches in the glass and those scratches collect more residue every session after. A scratched flask only gets worse from there. Decorative inserts (spirals, bubbles, anything inside the glass) are harder to reach with a brush. For those, the shake method with soapy water works better.
