It's one of the critical joints on the hookah. A leak at this spot lets in outside air, dilutes the smoke, and ruins the flavor. Even a small gap under the bowl can fully kill a session. A good gasket grips the bowl stem snugly without needing force to seat it. If you have to push hard to make it sit, the gasket is the wrong size, and forcing it just stresses the stem. Right fit, gentle seat, sealed pull. That's the test.
Standard seal test: cover the hose port with your palm, fit the bowl with its gasket, and cover the holes in the bowl. Try drawing through the hose. If you feel firm resistance and don't hear any hissing, the joint is sealed. If air pulls in easily, check and reseat the under-bowl gasket. Same test works for finding leaks at other joints too, just keep covering ports until you find the one that gives. It's a one-minute diagnosis that saves whole evenings.
Replace it when the gasket has deformed enough that it no longer makes a tight seal. With regular use that's typically every 6 to 12 months. Silicone gaskets last longer than rubber. Keep 2 or 3 spares at home at all times. It's the cheapest part on the hookah and the one most likely to save a session. Worth more than the price tag in saved frustration.
