The valve ball sits inside the purge valve on the hookah. Blow into the hose and the ball lifts, opening the valve so stale smoke vents out through the side of the stem. Draw on the hose and the ball drops, sealing the valve so air flows the right direction. Simple mechanism, but without a working ball the valve can't do its job and stale smoke from the base has nowhere to go. Result: muddy flavor and a session that won't refresh between rounds.
Unscrew the valve (threaded or snap-fit depending on model), take the ball out, and rinse both parts in warm water with a drop of detergent. If the ball is coated in molasses residue, let it soak in warm water for 10 minutes and wipe it down with a soft brush. After reassembly, check that the ball moves freely inside its seat. If it sticks or won't fully drop back into position, dry it more thoroughly or replace it. They cost basically nothing.
Valve balls come in different diameters, typically 11 to 14 mm, depending on the hookah model. Before buying, pop the old ball out and measure it with calipers or compare it against the new package. Worth buying a small assortment pack with a few sizes, since the balls cost only a few złoty and a working valve is the guarantee that the purge function keeps working for the next several months. Keep a couple spare in the accessories drawer.
