Clay (terracotta) has been the material of choice for hookah bowls for hundreds of years. Its porosity lets the material breathe, which means smoke without the metallic or plastic aftertaste you sometimes catch with other materials. Experienced smokers say clay holds and distributes heat better than ceramic or glass, and there's truth to that in practice. The catch is fragility. Clay needs breaking in, and a drop on a hard surface usually ends the bowl. Treat it carefully and the flavor advantage is real.
Soak the bowl in clean water for 15 to 30 minutes. The most effective break-in method: coat the inside with honey or molasses and warm it in the oven at 100 °C for 20 minutes. That opens the pores of the clay and gives it character. As an alternative, run two or three sessions with very few coals and low heat. After break-in, the bowl gives noticeably better flavor than it did out of the box. Skipping this step works, but you're leaving performance on the table.
Treated well, a clay bowl lasts several years. Store it in a soft pouch or a padded box. Let it cool naturally after each session. Hitting it with cold water while still hot is the fastest way to crack it. Rinse with warm water after every use. For molasses buildup, a soft brush is enough, and if you need more, a mild unscented dish detergent works fine. Don't use abrasive scrubbers, they damage the porous surface that gives clay its character in the first place.
