Rinse after each session with warm water and soap or a disinfectant cleaner. For a deeper clean, soak in a 3:1 water-to-vinegar solution for 15 minutes. Wooden tips don't tolerate soaking, so wipe them with a damp cloth and oil them with mineral oil once a month instead. Skip the dishwasher. The high heat warps the shape and ruins the fit on the hose. A quick rinse after every session keeps the deep clean from becoming a chore.
Stainless steel and glass are completely neutral. Wood can add a subtle aroma of its own, which some smokers like and others find distracting. Plastic, after enough sessions, starts giving a faint plastic note to the draw. Silicone is neutral and doesn't absorb aromas. If clean, undiluted tobacco flavor matters to you, go with silicone or stainless steel. Wood is fine if you actively want that character. Plastic for the disposable role only.
