A stem brush cleans the inside of the tube that carries smoke from the bowl down to the base. Molasses and resin deposits build up in that tube over time, and they ruin flavor and restrict airflow when ignored. Cleaning the stem is one of the simplest ways to keep the tobacco aroma clean session after session. Out of sight, out of mind for most people, which is exactly why it ends up being the silent killer of flavor on long-owned hookahs.
Every 10 to 15 sessions is enough for regular use. Wet the brush with warm water and a drop of dish soap and run it through the tube several times with circular motions. Then rinse with clean warm water. For heavy deposits, add baking soda to the soaking water. Don't force the brush if it's catching on something. Pull it back, rotate, and try again. Tearing a brush head off inside the stem is a problem you don't want.
The brush needs a flexible shaft (metal or plastic) that can navigate any bends in the stem, and a soft head sized to your hookah's internal diameter. Brush sets that cover multiple sizes, for the stem, bowl, and hose, are a convenient one-order solution. If the stem has an unusual curve or a narrow throat, check the shaft length against the stem before buying, since a brush that doesn't reach all the way through is just half a clean.
